Agartala, 23rd July 2024:    Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury criticized the Union Budget, calling it pro-corporate and designed to benefit large companies. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the budget for the 2024-25 financial year today.

Chaudhury, also a CPIM MLA, commented, “Although I haven’t reviewed the budget in detail, the media reports and the Union Finance Minister’s speeches indicate there are no major changes compared to the previous budget. There are no specific measures to create jobs or address the decline in employment opportunities in critical sectors. The budget, much like those of previous years, is aimed at benefiting corporations in various ways.”

He further highlighted the lack of proposals for job creation in the public sector, noting that subsidies have been allocated to support job creation by the private sector. “This is yet another move to benefit corporations. In rural areas, job and food crises persist, and the gap between the rich and poor is widening. To address this, there should have been a significant increase in MNREGA funding. Similarly, there are no substantial increases in allocations for agriculture, food subsidies, or support for underprivileged groups like ST and SC communities. Overall, this budget, like its predecessors, is anti-poor, anti-people, and pro-corporate, presented under the guise of Viksit Bharat,” Chaudhury added.
