Agartala, 20th August 2024:  In a tragic turn of events, three families were left homeless after their houses collapsed due to abnormal rainfall late last night. The incident took place around 2 a.m. in Sudharam Para, a locality within the Ambasa sub-division as torrential rains continued to batter the state, causing widespread disruption and devastation.

For several days, the state has been grappling with heavy monsoon rains that have affected both urban and rural areas alike. From the bustling capital to the most remote villages, the relentless downpour has brought life to a standstill, triggering floods and landslides that have left thousands in distress.

The families in Sudharam Para had already been living in fear, as rainwater had accumulated dangerously close to their homes. The ongoing construction work on the Ambasa Kamalpur road, particularly the installation of new culverts, had exacerbated the situation. According to the affected residents, water from the road had been collecting in large amounts, and with no proper drainage system in place, the foundations of their homes became increasingly unstable.

“We’ve seen the water freeze and enter our homes before,” said one of the homeowners, recalling a previous incident when rainwater had seeped into their house during the construction work. “Back then, the workers managed to drain the water using a dredger, but this time, no action was taken. We had no warning, no help. We lost everything in the blink of an eye.”

The collapse of the houses came as a shock to the families, who were forced to flee in the middle of the night with whatever belongings they could carry. The news of the disaster quickly spread through the community, prompting residents to block the road in protest. They demanded immediate action from the company responsible for the road construction, which had received the contract to carry out the work.

Responding to the blockade, officials from the construction company arrived at the scene and engaged in discussions with the affected families. After hearing their grievances, the company assured them that they would take responsibility for the damages and promised to rebuild the destroyed homes.

“We understand the gravity of the situation and are committed to making things right,” said a spokesperson for the company. “We will ensure that the families are provided with new homes and that the necessary measures are taken to prevent such incidents in the future.”

Following this assurance, the road blockade was lifted, and the company’s officials began planning the reconstruction efforts. However, the incident has left the families and the entire community shaken, raising concerns about the safety of other homes in the area as the rains continue.

As the monsoon season progresses, the state remains on high alert, with authorities urging residents in vulnerable areas to take precautions and stay informed about weather developments. Meanwhile, the families of Sudharam Para are left to rebuild their lives, hoping for better days ahead.
