Ruckus in Odisha Assembly for second day, House adjourned till 1600 hours

Date:

The Odisha Assembly witnessed ruckus for the second consecutive day on Wednesday as the Opposition Congress and BJD disrupted proceedings of the house over their respective demands, forcing Speaker Surama Padhy to suspend the session till 1600 hours without transacting any business.

On Tuesday, the Odisha Assembly also witnessed chaos as the Opposition Congress and BJD members disrupted proceedings, leading to the Speaker adjourning the House twice until 1600 hours.

As the Assembly convened at 10:30 hours for the day to take up the question hour, Congress and BJD members rushed to the Speaker’s podium, shouted slogans, and attempted to stall the question hour business.

The Congress members opposed the recent Supreme Court verdict on the reservation for SC and ST, while the BJD members demanded an RDC probe into the liquor tragedy at Chikiti in Odisha’s Ganjam district.

Despite the opposition’s protests, the Speaker asked Deputy Chief Minister K.V. Singh Deo to reply to a question.

However, the opposition intensified their slogans, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House until 1130 hours.

When the House reconvened at 1130 hours, both Congress and BJD members again rushed into the well of the House, raising slogans in support of their demands.

The Speaker, sensing the opposition’s mood, again adjourned the session until 1600 hours without transacting any business.

On Tuesday, Congress members created a ruckus inside the well of the House during the question hour, demanding student elections in educational institutions across the state.

The Opposition BJD members also raised concerns about the fate of the privilege notice against Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and demanded that the remarks made by State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling, calling for the arrest of the Leader of the Opposition, be expunged from the House proceedings.

The BJD also demanded to know what action the government had taken against the Governor’s son for allegedly assaulting a government official.

Due to the opposition’s protests, the debate on the question hour, zero hour, and adjournment motion was washed out.

However, on Wednesday, both parties changed their stands with the Congress members raising the issue of the Supreme Court’s recent verdict on SC and ST reservations, the BJD demanding an RDC probe into the state’s liquor tragedy.

The Congress and the BJD members raised slogans inside the well of the house and rushed to the Speaker’s podium in their attempts to stall the business of the house from the question hour onwards, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the session twice until 1600 hours.
