Agartala, 16th September 2024: In a state that prides itself on good governance, three individuals from two families in the Golaghati assembly constituency are facing severe hardship due to the sudden cessation of their government old-age allowances. Raidhan Sarkar and Hiranbasi Sarkar, long-time recipients of the allowance have been left without this crucial support for the past four months. The allowance, which they relied on to purchase essential medicines was abruptly stopped for reasons unknown.
Despite submitting the necessary documents to the Jampuijala RD Block office and receiving assurances that their allowances would be resumed soon, Raidhan and Hiranbasi Sarkar continue to wait in vain. “We were told that the issue would be resolved quickly, but months have passed, and we are still without our allowance,” said Raidhan Sarkar.
Adding to the family’s woes, Hiranbasi Sarkar’s 64-year-old son, Thakurdhan Sarkar has been battling cancer for the past year. Despite multiple applications and assurances that his condition would expedite the process, Thakurdhan has yet to receive any financial support. “Our family is very poor. If I had received the allowance, at least I could have bought my medicines,” lamented Thakurdhan Sarkar.
Local residents are holding the department responsible for the deprivation faced by these families. On Monday morning, Raidhan Sarkar, Hiranbasi Sarkar, and his cancer-stricken son, Thakurdhan, approached the media to highlight their plight and demand immediate intervention from the state government. “We urge the authorities to look into this matter and ensure that our allowances are reinstated without further delay,” they appealed.
