Agartala, 25th September 2024: Sourav Ganguly, the Brand Ambassador of Tripura Tourism, has contributed Rs 10 lakh towards relief efforts for those affected by the recent floods in Tripura. This was announced by Tripura Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury during a press conference held on World Tourism Day.
Chowdhury highlighted the devastating impact of the floods, which have claimed 39 lives, and affirmed the government’s ongoing commitment to supporting those affected. In a gesture of solidarity, Ganguly, who recently returned from a foreign trip, reached out to the minister, expressing his responsibility to assist the people of Tripura during this difficult time.
“As part of the World Tourism Day celebration, we decided that on September 26, we would provide relief kits containing essential items to families who lost members in the floods,” Chowdhury shared. He also mentioned that Ganguly sent a video message along with his donation to convey his support.
In addition, the Tripura Tourism Department has been actively procuring relief materials for the flood victims. The main event for World Tourism Day will take place on September 27 at Ujjayanta Palace, with Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha in attendance. The program will honor the unsung heroes who assisted in rescue efforts during the floods, along with cultural performances, including a special appearance by renowned singer Srikanta Acharya from West Bengal. Governor Indrasena Reddy will also be present for the morning session of the event.
Minister Chowdhury further noted that since Ganguly’s appointment as the brand ambassador, there has been a significant increase in tourist arrivals in Tripura. “People are coming to explore the beauty of Tripura,” he said, though he acknowledged that the number of Bangladeshi tourists has declined due to recent circumstances. The government is focusing on improving tourist destinations and is in discussions with foreign investors to promote the state as a global tourism hub.
