Agartala, 8th October 2024: Leader of the Opposition, Jitendra Chaudhury, has formally requested the Chief Minister, Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, to initiate legal proceedings against a state minister accused of spreading communally provocative messages on social media. Chaudhury’s letter emphasizes the importance of addressing such incendiary behavior to prevent unrest among the populace.
In his correspondence, Chaudhury expressed shock over the recent release on bail of three youths who were arrested for verbally assaulting traffic police officers. He noted, “I was extremely shocked and surprised to learn that all three accused received permanent bail. Despite public outcry and the police’s initial action in arresting these individuals, it is astonishing that they were granted bail without even spending a day in custody.”
The Leader of the Opposition highlighted that the West Tripura District Superintendent of Police had publicly stated that the three were arrested under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. He questioned the rationale behind granting such quick bail, especially when charges were filed under this specific act, which typically prohibits early release.
Chaudhury urged that the case not be dismissed as merely the release of “three antisocial elements,” warning that this could embolden similar behavior among other criminals. He asserted, “This casual approach to dealing with hardcore criminals will only inspire and encourage anti-social elements throughout the state, especially given the recent series of serious incidents, including those in Gandatwisa, Kaitorabari, and Kadamtala.”
He expressed grave concerns about the state’s law and order situation, emphasizing the need for a more robust response to criminal activities. Furthermore, he condemned the minister for allegedly disseminating harmful, communally provocative messages on social media, stating that such actions must be addressed legally to ensure the health and well-being of the state and to uphold the principle that the law is applied equally to all citizens in Tripura.
