Agartala, 8th October 2024:   Leaders of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) state committee met with the Minority Welfare Department on deputation, presenting a three-point demand list. The organization has set a two-week deadline for their demands to be met, warning that failure to do so will result in a larger movement.

SFI State Secretary Sandeepan Deb highlighted the reduction in scholarship amounts for students enrolled in B.Ed and D.El.Ed courses under the Minority Welfare Department. “The amount has been reduced from Rs 90,000 to Rs 50,000,” Deb stated.

When questioned, the department’s director cited issues in obtaining funds from the state government as the reason for the reduction.

Deb emphasized the impact of the reduced scholarships, stating, “Due to the reduction of scholarship money, students are facing various problems.”

The SFI has outlined three key demands: Payment of Rs 90,000 to students in B.Ed and D.El.Ed courses, as per the previous notification; ensuring that all qualified students (based on marks obtained) are included in the merit list and provided affordable admission opportunities; and the department should publish the merit list annually on time and ensure prompt payment of stipends.

The SFI has made it clear that if these demands are not addressed within the stipulated timeframe, they will escalate their actions.
