Agartala, 18th October 2024:   Opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhury visited the grieving family of Badal Tripura, who died following alleged torture in police custody, condemning the state’s law and order under the BJP-IPFT-Tipra Motha government. “Is this what the coalition government offers its citizens? The killing of traders in the capital city and the police brutality that led to Badal Tripura’s death during Durga Puja?” Chaudhury asked.

Badal was detained by Manubazar police on October 13, accused of stealing rubber materials. “Instead of following proper procedure, the police brutalized him in the station. His family found him in a dire state, but the authorities did not refer him for advanced medical treatment, despite his severe condition. Where was the Chief Minister Health Yojana card? Where was the Ayushman Bharat card?” Chowdhury demanded to know.

Badal was treated at South Tripura District Hospital at Santirbazar but succumbed to his injuries on October 16. When protests broke out, demanding justice, Chaudhury claimed that “mandal leaders attempted to silence the protesters.” He did not mince words when addressing the state’s police force, stating, “Amitabh Ranjan, the current Director General is failing the people. Corruption has seeped into every corner of the system, and honest officers are being prevented from serving the public interest.”

Chaudhury urged a thorough investigation into Badal’s death. “The people of Tripura demand justice. Arresting five policemen does not close this case. We want the truth, and we want accountability.” He also called on the government to provide for Badal’s family, including ensuring education for his three daughters and stable employment. “If the government fails to act, this entire family will be destroyed. This is their responsibility,” Chaudhury asserted.
