Agartala, 4th November 2024:   A 47-year-old Bangladeshi man identified as Jasim Mia was arrested by the Border Security Force (BSF) after he allegedly crossed the border illegally into India through the dense forest region of Madhupur. BSF officials confirmed that Jasim, a resident of Kalta Dighirpar in the Brahmanbaria district of Bangladesh had been under surveillance due to suspected involvement in cross-border smuggling activities.

According to Madhupur Police sources, “Jasim Mia has been implicated in several instances of border-crossing with the assistance of border brokers. We received intelligence indicating that certain individuals from across the border frequently exploit this area for unauthorized entry.”

Reports suggest that on Saturday afternoon, Jasim Mia accompanied by three other Bangladeshi nationals attempted to cross the border near the Orang Para area under the guise of clearing forest brush. However, locals from the area allege that the group reportedly intoxicated went on a violent rampage, brandishing machetes and other weapons and even attacking residents in Orang Para. “They seemed intoxicated and created a scene,” recounted one resident adding, “It was a frightening experience. We had no choice but to intervene and apprehend them.”

Villagers managed to subdue the four men and subsequently handed them over to the BSF personnel stationed in the Miyapara camp. Following a joint meeting on Sunday between the BSF and Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB), three of the men were repatriated to Bangladesh, while Jasim Mia remained in Indian custody due to additional allegations against him, including prior involvement in illegal trade.

Madhupur Police brought Jasim before the Bishalgarh Sub-Divisional Court on Monday. According to law enforcement officials, “Jasim Mia had previously been detained by the BGB in Bangladesh on smuggling charges but managed to escape, allegedly with the help of certain border operatives.”

Currently, Jasim Mia is being held in an Indian jail as authorities investigate his cross-border activities. Despite alleged attempts by local smugglers to secure his release, law enforcement remains firm. “We are committed to safeguarding the border,” affirmed a senior BSF official.
