Agartala, 2nd December 2024: The Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) and its affiliates including IWFT, Youth IPFT, Atisa and IMWU have announced a historic central rally to be held on December 4. The rally will be organized at Khumulwng aims to demand the formation of a Tripuraland state from the TTAADC area, the introduction of the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill in the current winter session of the Indian Parliament, and preparations for the upcoming village committee elections. Lawrence Ilistari, MLA of UPPL from Assam will be the chief guest at the event.
IPFT General Secretary Swapan Debbarma made the announcement at a press conference held at the party office in Krishnanagar on Monday. He expressed the party’s dissatisfaction with the government’s recent plan to demolish the old Governor’s House at Pushpabanta Palace and construct a five-star hotel in collaboration with the Taj Group. “Article 49 of the Constitution of India states that all historical palaces, places, monuments, memorials, and inscriptions should be preserved, and central and state laws should be made for this purpose. Tripura also has the Tripura Enchanted Monument and Archaeological Sites and Remnants Act, 1997. Instead of demolishing the Raj Bhavan, it should be renovated and preserved,” Debbarma stated.
Debbarma emphasized that the state government cannot make or amend laws in violation of the main law of the Constitution. “The IPFT team believes that the state government and its advocates should examine this issue and make a statement,” he added.
The IPFT also highlighted that during the tenure of the late Revenue Minister N. C. Debbarma, the foundation stone for the construction of a digital museum in the old Governor’s House of Pushpabanta Palace in Agartala was laid by Her Excellency the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, on October 14, 2022, with an allocation of Rs 40 crore. “We demand that the work be started immediately,” Debbarma urged.
