Agartala, 24th December 2024: Tripura Congress President Asish Kumar Saha has urged Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha to brief citizens on the decisions made during the recently concluded North Eastern Council (NEC) Plenary Session in Agartala.
In his letter to the Chief Minister, Saha emphasized the importance of transparency regarding the development initiatives discussed during the session held on December 20-21.
“This was only the second time since 2008 that the NEC plenary session was hosted in Tripura. Since its inception in 1972, the NEC has been pivotal in driving socio-economic and infrastructural growth across the Northeastern region, including Sikkim. It was inaugurated by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as a visionary step by the Congress to foster planned and integrated development in this historically underserved region,” Saha wrote.
He further highlighted the establishment of the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER) in 2001 to strengthen the NEC’s objectives. He pointed out that most major projects under the NEC, such as the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in 1972, Dr. B. Barooah Cancer Institute (BBCI) in 1974, North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) in 1976, and the North Eastern Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST) in 1984, were completed before 1998.
Expressing concern over the lack of communication, Saha said, “The outcomes of the 72nd plenary session remain unknown to the people of Tripura and the Northeast. Citizens are unaware of the projects undertaken, decisions made, or the demands raised by the Chief Minister for Tripura’s development. As taxpayers, they deserve to know the benefits of hosting this ‘Rajsuya’ plenary session.”
He urged the Chief Minister to disclose the session’s key decisions through a press release or conference. Saha also criticized the government for failing to involve journalists in covering the event and demanded an apology for this oversight.
Additionally, he requested the Chief Minister to ensure that future VIP movements do not disrupt the daily lives of citizens.
