Japan airlines hit by cyberattack: Reports

Date:

The Japan Airlines (JAL) flag carrier said it had been hit by a cyberattack that had caused system problems and flight disruptions, Japanese media reported on Thursday.

The attack occurred on Thursday morning at 7:25 a.m. (22:25 GMT Wednesday), when the network connecting internal corporate resources to external systems was compromised, the Kyodo news agency reported. As a result, there were some issues with the system responsible for managing passenger baggage.

Kyodo also reported that JAL had suspended bookings for domestic and international flights as of Thursday, but tickets previously booked were still valid. The airline was able to temporarily disable the router that was believed to be the main target of the cybercriminals, the report added.

At least 24 domestic flights have been reported delayed, and that number is expected to increase. The airline has contacted the police to investigate the situation.
