Agartala, 7th February 2025: Maharaja Bir Bikram University (MBBU) in collaboration with the Ministry of Earth Sciences on Thursday organized a two-day National Seminar on Environmental Changes in North Eastern India: Past, Present and Future. The event focused on the challenges posed by environmental changes and the need for sustainable solutions.
The inaugural session was attended by Vice Chancellor Professor Satyadeo Poddar, who emphasized the significance of environmental awareness in modern society. “Human civilization has always depended on nature for its survival, but now, due to human activities, nature is suffering,” he remarked. He stressed the need for a scientific approach to conservation and called for greater research initiatives to address environmental degradation.
The event was inaugurated by Science, Technology & Environment Minister Animesh Debbarma, who highlighted the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability. “Our state is rich in natural resources, and we must protect them through innovative policies and community participation,” he stated.
During the seminar, Dr. Bijoy Kumar Kar, Head of the Geography Department, presented key research findings on climate change impacts in the North East. “The region is witnessing unpredictable weather patterns, riverbank erosion, and biodiversity loss. If we do not act now, the future will be even more uncertain,” he warned.
Several researchers and academicians from different universities across India participated in the seminar, presenting studies on sustainable agriculture, water conservation, and forest management. The Vice Chancellor also distributed digital certificates to the participants, marking the university’s transition to paperless documentation.
The seminar concluded with a call to action for collective responsibility towards environmental preservation, stressing the importance of policy reforms and grassroots-level awareness campaigns.
