Agartala, 7th February 2025: Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath attended the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SGMBY) camp at 79 Tilla area here on Friday, addressing the importance of the scheme aimed at promoting self-reliant power generation among households in Tripura. Despite a modest response so far, the minister expressed optimism about the program’s potential.
“The response has not been very high, but there is some interest in PM-SGMBY across Tripura,” said Minister Nath. “Such camps are held across the state, with a significant number of them in the Agartala Municipal Corporation area. Representatives from various vendors and banks, along with TSECL officials, are present at these camps for registration.”
He acknowledged that the concept of PM-SGMBY might not be fully understood by the public yet, but efforts are underway to raise awareness. “Public representatives, MLAs, and department officials are working to make people understand the benefits of this yojana. Our target is at least 50,000 registrations under PM-SGMBY, but so far, around 12,000 registrations have been done, mostly from Agartala,” Nath stated.
The minister elaborated on the scheme’s objective, highlighting how it aims to make households self-reliant in power generation. “The PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is designed to empower families to produce their own electricity. A 1 kW solar panel system, costing between Rs 65,000 and Rs 75,000, will be made affordable through a government subsidy of up to Rs 33,000. For larger systems, subsidies go up to Rs 66,000 for 2 kW and Rs 85,800 for 3 kW installations,” he explained.
Nath also pointed out an additional benefit of the scheme, remarking, “This scheme not only ensures energy self-sufficiency but also opens up avenues for income generation by selling surplus electricity.”
The event was attended by corporators Pradip Chanda, Lata Nath, Biswajit Roy, and others, who supported the initiative and interacted with consumers.
