Robbery at Udaipur HDFC Bank: Bank Manager and police constable conspire

Agartala, 20th February 2025:    A bank manager and a police constable have been accused of conspiring to rob customers of Rs 82 lakh at HDFC Bank, Udaipur. Multiple cases have been registered at Radhakishorpur Police Station in connection with the theft of money deposited in the bank. The investigation is ongoing, but concerns have arisen about its integrity due to the involvement of a police constable from the same station.

“The citizens of Udaipur are deeply shocked and terrified by this nexus between police constable Jayanta Saha and HDFC Bank manager Abhishek Sarkar,” said a resident who wished to remain anonymous. The alleged criminals’ actions only came to light recently, sparking widespread fear and distrust in the community.

Constable Jayanta Saha, a permanent resident of the area adjacent to Haryananda School and allegedly close to the ruling BJP, reportedly considers himself the boss of the police station. “He introduces himself as a close friend of the local minister and is involved in the cyber crime cell of the station,” said another source. These factors have raised serious questions about the transparency and fairness of the investigation.

The scandal came to light when Niyati Sarkar Roy of College Tilla filed a written complaint with Radhakishorpur Police Station against the bank manager and Priyanka Pal, wife of Police Constable Jayanta Saha. Case number 5/2025, BNS under sections 318(4), 318(3), and 351(2), details how Rs 25,50,261, including fixed deposits, were looted. A significant portion of the money was allegedly transferred to Priyanka Pal’s account, as confirmed by bank statements.

Similarly, Suniti Dutta, a resident near Haryananda School, filed a complaint (case number 21/2025, BNS 318(4) 61(2)) after her Rs 18 lakh fixed deposit was transferred to a fake account. Lopamudra Roy of Udaipur also lodged a similar complaint against the manager of Udaipur HDFC Bank for prematurely withdrawing her fixed deposit (case number 26/2025, 218(4), 318(3)). So far, it is reported that a total of Rs 82 lakh has been looted.

“The investigation is underway under the supervision of the Additional Superintendent of Police,” stated District Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak. However, doubts about the impartiality of the probe remain. “When the name of police constable Jayant is implicated, is it possible to conduct a fair investigation with him still stationed here?” questioned a local activist.

The conscious civil society of Udaipur demands Jayant’s immediate removal from the police station, the return of the looted money to customers through a proper investigation, and exemplary punishment for the culprits. There have been previous complaints against Jayant, including allegations of secretly selling items seized in NDPS cases and settling cases for money. He is also accused of orchestrating an attack on the police on the Rajnagar Bridge due to differences of opinion.
