Agartala, 26th March 2025:    Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury on Wednesday accused Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen of silencing opposition voices in the Tripura Assembly, claiming that democracy is being “slaughtered” under the BJP government.

Addressing a press conference here in the Assembly premises on Wednesday afternoon, Chaudhury announced that the CPIM would boycott the remaining days of the current budget session, calling it a “shameful chapter” in the state’s political history.

Chaudhury alleged that during the budget discussions on March 24, a handful of individuals in the government were “looting the people’s money and property” and running a “commission or cut-money business.” He further claimed that Parliamentary Minister Ratan Lal Nath made insulting remarks, including comments identifying caste in the assembly. In response, Chowdhury submitted a notice of violation of rights against the minister.

However, Speaker Sen reportedly accepted a similar notice submitted by Minister Nath instead, rejecting Chowdhury’s submission. “The Speaker has destroyed the sacred vehicle of the assembly by denying my existence,” Chowdhury stated, accusing Sen of acting as a “referee for the ruling party.”

The opposition leader reiterated his stance, saying, “Democracy has been killed in the Tripura Assembly during the BJP government. The ruling party has written a shameful chapter in this budget session.” He accused Speaker Sen of suppressing opposition voices and setting a precedent of “turning day into night and night into day.”

Despite the boycott, CPIM MLAs have continued to fight for public interest in the assembly over the past three days.
