Agartala, 20th April 2025:  Consumers in Agartala, who pay the highest electricity bills in Tripura, will now be the primary focus under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, announced Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Sunday.

Speaking at a public awareness and registration camp organized at Lal Bahadur Gymnasium in the capital, the minister highlighted the importance of solar energy in the state’s future and underscored the capital city’s special status in the implementation of the scheme.

“In Agartala, electricity bills are higher because there are hardly any hook line connections. This makes the capital a priority area for solar electrification,” Nath said, while inaugurating the camp. He added that with the absence of major rivers, Tripura has little potential for hydropower, making solar energy the only sustainable alternative.

Under the PM’s flagship solar scheme, installing a 1 kilowatt solar panel system would cost around ₹65,000 to ₹70,000, with a subsidy of ₹33,000 being provided. “If a household can get 25 years of free electricity service by investing just ₹33,000 to ₹35,000, nothing could be more beneficial,” the minister stated.

The camp was held on the initiative of Lal Bahadur Gymnasium, with its president and senior journalist Pranab Sarkar, state BJP leader Subal Bhowmik, and several other dignitaries in attendance.

Recognized vendors of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL) also participated in the event. They guided local residents on availing bank loans, the installation process, and subsidy claims under the scheme.

The awareness drive aimed at encouraging urban households to switch to clean and sustainable solar energy, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for an energy-resilient India.
