Agartala, 10th June 2025:    A 75-year-old man identified as Shahid Mia is wanted by police for allegedly raping a 9-year-old girl multiple times in the Barapathar area under Sonamura police station, officials reported today.

According to authorities, Shahid Mia, a resident of Ward No. 5, Ormai Gram Panchayat frequently visited the home of the victim’s grandmother under the pretense of discussing personal matters. Sources indicate that Mia developed an inappropriate interest in the woman’s 9-year-old granddaughter and sought opportunities to be alone with her.

The assaults allegedly took place on June 03 and 05, with Mia reportedly threatening to kill the girl if she disclosed the abuse. Fearing for her life, the child remained silent until after the second assault on June 05, when she confided in her grandmother about the traumatic incidents.

Local authorities were alerted after some individuals attempted to suppress the case on Mia’s behalf. The Bishalgarh Child Welfare Committee along with the Sepahijala District Child Protection Officer and the Social Education Department intervened rescuing the girl and bringing her to Sonamura police station. The victim’s grandmother subsequently filed a formal complaint leading to a case being registered against Mia under multiple sections including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

This evening, police conducted a medical examination of the victim and her statement is scheduled to be recorded in the Sonamura court today. Meanwhile, Mia has been absconding since this afternoon with Sonamura police launching a manhunt to arrest him.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage in the community, with residents demanding severe punishment for the accused. However, officials from the Sepahijala District Child Protection Office and the Social Education Department declined to comment on the case when approached by media personnel this evening.
