Soaring mercury level affects normal life in Assam, IMD predicts more hotter days

 With the mercury level soaring, normal life was seen getting affected in Assam. While the Assam capital town Guwahati recorded 37 degree Celsius on Wednesday, other towns across the state have also recorded higher temperatures.

Officials of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Guwahati said that although temperatures have increased, it is yet to reach the benchmark to be declared a “heat wave.”

IMD officials at Guwahati said that the heat wave is declared only when the temperature crosses 40 degree Celsius.

“As per the records, the temperature is likely to increase by 3 to 5 degree celcius in the days to come,” he said, adding that people of Assam expect some respite only on June 16 or June 17 when there will be some rains.

According to the latest temperature report, several locations in the state, including Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Tezpur, and Jorhat, have recorded maximum temperatures much higher than the seasonal average.

He said that Guwahati experienced 37.3°C on Tuesday, which is 4.8°C above the normal temperature.

Similarly, Dibrugarh recorded 37.7°C (6.2°C above normal) on Tuesday.

The IMD forecasts that the maximum temperatures in Assam will continue to be 3°C to 5°C higher than normal, with no significant change expected over the next few days, the officials said.

It may be mentioned here that several districts of Assam have changed the school timings due to the extreme heat.
