Agartala, 16th June 2025: Dharmanagar police intensified their crackdown on smuggling activities, recovering 70,000 Burmese cigarettes during a naka checking operation near the Anandabazar SPO camp late last night. Three youths were arrested in connection with the incident.
According to police reports, officers intercepted a luxury car bearing registration number TR05G0597 at the checkpoint. Initially, reports suggested that nine cartons containing 90,000 cigarettes had been recovered. However, Police Officer Suleman Reang clarified that the final count stood at 70,000 Burmese cigarettes packed in seven cartons.
“The police operation against cigarette smuggling will continue, and appropriate legal action is being taken against those arrested,” Reang stated.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Sourav Sinha of Damcherra area and Prakash Debnath and Biswajit Debnath of Chamtila area in Panisagar. Authorities seized both the vehicle and the contraband, marking another development in the fight against illicit trade.
This seizure comes in the wake of an earlier incident in March when 40 cartons of Burmese cigarettes were found after a car accident in Rajnagar. Although, no immediate arrests were made at that time, two suspects were later apprehended for alleged involvement in smuggling.
Dharmanagar police reiterated their commitment to combating illegal cigarette trade. “Our efforts will persist to curb smuggling activities in North Tripura district,” an officer from the police station affirmed.
