Widespread robberies spark panic at Churaibari; Over 100 villagers file complaint

Agartala, 1st July 2025:   A wave of theft and robbery incidents has plunged several areas of the North Tripura district particularly Kadamtala, Churaibari and Shanichhara into a state of fear and frustration with over a hundred villagers filing a formal complaint at the Churaibari Police Station today.

Despite routine police patrols, organized criminal gangs continue to strike residential areas almost nightly, prompting concerns over the effectiveness of law enforcement. According to sources, the perpetrators have allegedly formed a “Police Alert Group” on WhatsApp, which circulates updates on police movements in real time. This digital surveillance has reportedly allowed thieves, robbers and drug traffickers to evade capture and carry out their crimes undeterred.

Late Monday night, two adjacent homes in Ward No. 6 of Netaji Para under Purba Churaibari Gram Panchayat were targeted. The home of Prashanta Das narrowly escaped a theft when robbers attempted to steal his motorbike but fled after failing to break the lock and alerting the household. However, the same group succeeded in stealing a black Pulsar bike bearing registration number TR05C-7842 from the neighboring residence of Askar Ali.

These incidents follow a string of recent thefts, including the looting of sawn timber from Prashanta Das’ shop and a burglary at Mina Devi’s home near the railway warehouse. The recurring nature of these crimes has unsettled the local population and raised alarm over the growing brazenness of the attackers.

Police sources indicate that many individuals involved in the robberies are believed to be drug addicts, whose desperation has made them more aggressive and less fearful of consequences. Residents report that such incidents are endangering lives and peace in the locality.

In response, a delegation of over 100 residents from Churaibari and Purba Churaibari Gram Panchayats submitted a written complaint today at 11 am, urging authorities to take swift and decisive action. Police officials have since initiated operations, though it remains to be seen how effectively they can dismantle the criminal network and restore public confidence.
