Agartala, 31st July 2025: The Fisheries Department of the Government of Tripura with financial backing from the National Fisheries Development Agency under the “Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampad Yojana” has successfully stocked approximately 1.84 lakh fishlings in the Khowai River during the 2025–23 fiscal period. The release operation was carried out at Bahadur Sardar Para in Teliamura subdivision.
Led by Teliamura Fisheries Superintendent Champa Pal, the initiative aims to enrich the river’s natural biodiversity and promote sustainable fish farming. Pal cautioned locals against the use of electric currents in fishing, stating the practice severely harms the fish life cycle and is a punishable offense under law.
The ceremonial release was graced by Tribal Welfare minister Bikash Debbarma in presence of social workers Watharai Malsus, Rashid Mia, Gopal Das and other guests. Minister Debbarma released several varieties of fishlings into the river and emphasized the long-term economic benefits for local fishermen.
“If these fry mature successfully, it will open income avenues for the fishing community and strengthen their socio-economic condition,” Debbarma stated. He further highlighted the efforts of the state Fisheries Department, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Professor Dr. Manik Saha, in advancing the welfare of Tripura’s fishing sector.
