Agartala, 14th August 2026 : Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Friday laid the foundation stone for the proposed Agartala Government Eye Hospital at Capital Complex, describing the project as a major expansion of specialised ophthalmic healthcare in Tripura.
Saha said the existing Eye Department had become inadequate to meet rising patient expectations and the growing need for advanced treatment. He noted that modern ophthalmology now offers specialised care for glaucoma, cataract, retinal disorders, squint and serious eye conditions affecting newborns.
“People’s expectations are much higher in this era of modernisation,” the Chief Minister said, stressing the need for a spacious facility equipped with advanced biomedical technology and supported by specialised doctors.
He said around ₹123 crore had been secured through SASKI for the project. The proposed hospital will come up as a G+4 structure, with provisions for additional vertical expansion in the future.
According to Saha, the facility will also strengthen medical education in the state. Postgraduate specialisation in ophthalmology has already commenced, and the new hospital will provide students with better infrastructure and training opportunities.
The Chief Minister said the government was simultaneously pursuing several healthcare projects, including a Mother and Child Health unit, a new Dental College building and a hostel. De-addiction centres are also being established across districts, with around ₹20 crore earmarked for each. Construction of the rehabilitation centre at Bishramganj has already begun.
On AGMC’s proposed increase in MBBS seats, Saha said the intake would rise beyond the initially discussed 100 seats, with work underway.
Addressing security concerns at GBP Hospital, he said the government had taken recent incidents seriously and ordered measures to strengthen surveillance and security, asserting that there would be “absolutely no compromise” on safety.
Saha also said the Medicine Department was being revamped and revealed plans to eventually replace the decades-old main GB Hospital building with a new high-rise structure. However, he said no specific completion timeline could yet be announced.
