Agartala, 27th March 2025: In a tragic incident, Sayan Pal (18), a 12th-standard student from Arya Colony, Belonia, drowned in the Muhuri River while participating in the holy Baruni bathing ritual on Wednesday afternoon.

According to eyewitnesses, Sayan, along with his friends, had gone to bathe under the Manurmukh railway bridge around 1 PM. Despite the presence of many bathers at the river, no one came forward to rescue him when he struggled in the water. Sayan, who did not know how to swim, tragically went under.

During the incident, another student, Dip Mitra, also began drowning. However, Diptanu Karmakar (16-17), a bystander at the riverbank, bravely jumped into the water and managed to save Deep Mitra. Despite his efforts, Deeptanu could not rescue Sayan. He shouted for help, but no one responded to his calls.

Following the distressing scene, the fire department was informed and promptly arrived at the location. Firefighters, along with local youths, launched a search operation in the river. After an hour of unsuccessful efforts, Akash Sen, a 17-year-old Class XI student, took a life jacket from the fire department, dived into the river, and managed to locate and pull Sayan’s body from the water.

Sayan was immediately transported to Belonia Hospital, but it was too late. After conducting the autopsy, authorities handed over his body to his grieving family.
