Agartala, 11th September 2026 : The Tripura State Mental Health Authority has stepped up scrutiny of private rehabilitation centres and mental health institutions across the state, issuing show-cause notices to 18 establishments allegedly operating without mandatory registration under the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017.
The notices, issued on September 9, have given the institutions seven days to explain why action should not be initiated against them. The authority has cautioned that failure to provide a satisfactory explanation or cooperate with the inquiry could lead to legal and administrative action.
The action stems from allegations that the concerned institutions have been providing mental health treatment and rehabilitation services, including to people struggling with substance abuse, without obtaining valid registration or permission from the competent authority. Section 65(1) of the Mental Healthcare Act makes registration mandatory for establishments providing such services.
The 18 institutions named are Jiban Jagrati Foundation in Shantirbazar, Holy Foundation in Jirania, Rupayan Foundation at Dashamighat, James Foundation in Jampuijala, Relieve Foundation on Bypass Road in Agartala, Hill Foundation in Bachaibari, Saksham Rehabilitation Center in Khumulung, Deep Foundation in Kanchanpur, Bethesda Rehab Facility in Nandannagar, Welfare Society Muchang in Kamalpur, Serene and Sober Foundation in Shalgara, Relieve Foundation at SPO Office in Sepahijala, Radhya Foundation in Barjala, Rejuvenation Foundation in Teliamura, Yapiri Katal Foundation in Gabardi, Revival Foundation in Tulashikhar, TSB Counseling Center in Takarjala and Edensend Foundation in Bishramganj.
The authority’s data indicates that registration remains incomplete across several districts. West Tripura has around 20 centres, with 12 having applied for registration. Of three centres in North Tripura, two have applied, while Dhalai has four centres with two applications. Khowai has seven centres, four of which have applied. All three centres in Unakoti have applied, while one of two in Gomati has done so. The lone centre in South Tripura has also applied, along with two of three centres in Sepahijala.
The authority has also highlighted compliance with 12 mandatory standards covering patient safety, food quality, room specifications, accessibility for persons with disabilities, biomedical safety and other essential requirements.
With several institutions allegedly failing to meet prescribed norms, the latest action underscores the authority’s focus on protecting the safety, dignity and rights of patients. Several centres have reportedly moved to apply for registration after receiving the notices.
