Agartala, 15th October 2024: Khowai Women’s Police Station arrested a 25-year-old youth named Akash Deb for marrying a 17-year-old minor girl. Deb is a resident of North Durganagar area of Khowai district and a car driver by profession met the minor girl Nitika Das through social media leading to a romantic relationship.
The incident came to light when Nitika’s family, after extensive searching, reported her missing to the Khowai Women’s police station. Acting on a tip-off, the police rescued Deb and the minor girl from a friend’s house in Agartala on Monday night.
On Tuesday, the police registered a case against Deb for illegally marrying a minor girl under case number 24/WKH 029. The charges include sections 137(1)(b), 351(2), 127(2), and 3(5) BNS.
The police revealed that Deb had been in a romantic relationship with the minor girl for a long time through social media. Despite efforts by the administration to prevent child marriages, some parents still attempt to marry off their daughters before the age of 18.
