Agartala, 19th June 2026: The North Tripura District and Sessions Court has sentenced a man named Sijarul SK to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for smuggling a massive consignment of cannabis from Tripura to Assam. The court also imposed a fine of ₹1,00,000 on the convict, with an additional two months of jail time in default of payment.
The incident traces back to November 15, 2022, when a routine police search led by SI Usharani Debnath at the Churaibari naka checkpoint intercepted a suspicious 12-wheeler truck. Two individuals from West Bengal’s Murshidabad—driver Fulshad SK and Sijarul SK—were inside. Following inconsistent statements, the driver confessed to carrying contraband. A thorough search supervised by the then-OC Dhrubajyoti Debbarma and the SDPO yielded 84 bundles of cannabis hidden under the driver’s seat and inside the vehicle’s roof, weighing a total of 560 kg and 600 grams.
A case was registered under the NDPS Act, and a chargesheet was later submitted by SI Piyush Kanti Saha. On Friday, the Special NDPS Court found Sijarul SK guilty based on the evidence presented. Meanwhile, the co-accused, Fulshad SK, has absconded after securing bail, prompting the court to issue an arrest warrant against him, as detailed by Public Prosecutor Partha Pal.
