Agartala, 6th November 2025:  In a major push toward achieving self-reliance in potato production, the Tripura government has announced assistance for 6,000 farmers under the Advanced Reproduction Culture (ARC) system, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath said on Wednesday.

Addressing reporters at Mahakaran, Minister Nath said each farmer will receive ₹2,000 as direct financial support in their bank accounts and ₹1,000 worth of agricultural inputs, taking the total government expenditure to around ₹1.8 crore.

Currently, 23,700 farmers across Tripura cultivate potatoes on approximately 47,341 kani of land. Under traditional methods, the average yield per kani ranged from 2,500 to 3,000 kg. However, with the ARC system, productivity has risen sharply to between 9,000 and 10,000 kg per kani, the minister noted.

Highlighting the government’s long-term vision, Nath said Tripura aims to achieve self-sufficiency in potato seed production by 2028–29 and in overall potato consumption by 2029–30.

The ARC system was first introduced experimentally in 2023 with 100 farmers, expanded to 400 farmers in 2024 following successful results. Encouraged by the outcomes, the government has now scaled up the initiative — 4,000 farmers will be covered under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) project and another 2,000 under the Watershed Management project.

The minister expressed confidence that the initiative will usher in a “new horizon” for Tripura’s agriculture sector, making the state self-sufficient and progressive in potato production.
