Agartala, 22nd May 2025: A 90-year-old woman from Uttar Charilam Gram Panchayat has been suffering for over a year due to a clerical error by the Social Welfare and Social Education department. Kalpana Debnath, a resident of Goutam Colony has been deprived of her social allowance for reasons still unknown to her.
Locals informed that Kalpana’s monthly visits to the bank had become a painful routine. “She comes every month hoping the allowance has come, but returns empty-handed,” said a neighbour. With no financial support, Kalpana couldn’t even afford basic medicine or Rs 10 vehicle fare to the bank. For the past three months, despite her age, she walked to the bank in the scorching sun and pouring rain.
Sensing the plight of the woman, MLA Sushanta Deb visited Kalpana’s residence today. He immediately contacted the concerned department and found that two years’ worth of her social allowance had been mistakenly credited to her account in advance. Due to this error, her payments were halted as per the department’s records.
“She told me she was even injured while trying to board a vehicle to go to the bank. The family has received all kinds of government assistance. But this technical lapse has caused undue suffering,” the MLA said.
Despite assurances, Kalpana still hasn’t seen the funds reflected in her bank account and her struggle continues.
