Agartala, 28th March 2025: Fish farming has emerged as a vital source of food, nutrition, employment, and income for millions, particularly in rural areas. Highlighting its significance, experts emphasize that fish, being an affordable source of animal protein, is one of the healthiest options to combat hunger and malnutrition. “The potential for income generation and economic prosperity through fish farming is immense. It is crucial to focus and invest in the overall development of the fisheries sector.”
Responding to a reference notice raised by BJP MLA Swapna Das Paul regarding plans to increase fish supply, Minister Sudhangshu Das provided a written reply during the assembly session, highlighting the government’s commitment to addressing the deficit and fostering growth in the fisheries sector.
A recent study revealed that Tripura leads the nation in fish consumption, with 99% of its population being fish consumers. The state’s per capita fish consumption stands at an impressive 27.83 kg per year, making it the second-largest consumer in India. “The demand for fish in Tripura is naturally very high,” noted Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das during the state assembly’s budget session.
Currently, Tripura faces a significant gap between fish demand and production. While the demand is 117,287.46 metric tons, production is only 85,805.68 metric tons, leaving a deficit of 31,481.78 metric tons. This shortfall is being addressed through imports from other states and neighboring countries.
To tackle this issue, the state government launched the Chief Minister’s Matsya Vikas Yojana in the financial year 2023-24, which has played a pivotal role in advancing fish farming in Tripura. Complementing this initiative are the Central Government’s Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana and the NEC Project. “These programs have significantly contributed to the development of fish farming in the state,” said Das.
