A new step towards safe motherhood: Tripura launches ‘Sampoorna Tripura Mission’

Agartala, 7th November 2025: In Tripura, to reduce maternal mortality and prevent other maternal complications, the “Sampoorna Tripura Mission” has been launched. Through this mission, training, guidance, and technical support are being provided to doctors, nurses, and health workers to ensure safe motherhood.

The initiative taken by National Health Mission, Health & FW Department, Government of Tripura, in collaboration with Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) and JHPIEGO.

A two-day training program for Medical Officers and Nursing Officers on was held on 5th & 6th November 2025 at Pragya Bhavan, Agartala. As part of this mission, 50 medical officers and nursing staff from across the state were trained on key causes of maternal mortality Hypertension, Postpartum Haemorrhage (PPH), and Anaemia and preconception care. The initiative aimed to strengthen technical capacity, improve facility preparedness, and accelerate progress toward safe motherhood in Tripura.

The trainees expressed their happiness for the updated knowledge and skill development they received, along with many new insights. A handbook on Pre-Conceptional Care, Anaemia, PPH, and Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy unfolded by dignitaries.

The event was graced by eminent dignitaries including Dr. Sunita Tandulwadkar, President FOGSI, whose leadership and vision for “Ek Rashtra Ek Mission – Swasthya Naari, Samruddha Watan” continue to inspire nationwide efforts for maternal health. She stressed upon the importance of Preconception care and urgent need to take steps to reduce teenage pregnancies in state of Tripura. The President – FOGSI was very pleased to witness the collaborative efforts of the State Government, FOGSI, and Jhpiego. In her address to the gathering, she committed to continuing support for the Sampoorna Tripura Mission to help bring down the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) to single digits in Tripura.

The Director of Health Services(incharge), Dr. Souvik Debbarme appreciated the FOGSI–Jhpiego initiative and requested to extend technical support for strengthening of Maternal Health Care services in Tripura. Member Secretary, NHM Dr. Nupur Debbarma reaffirmed NHM’s commitment to strengthen the public health system by ensuring active participation of government healthcare providers in the mission. She also expressed her gratitude to the FOGSI–Jhpiego team and requested to maintain continuity of technical support at state and district level. Speaking on gathering Dr Priti Kumar, Vice President – FOGSI highlighted the importance of clinical preparedness and continuous skill enhancement to reduce preventable maternal deaths.

Acknowledging contributions, Dr. Tandulwadkar felicitated officers for their collaboration and commitment to public–private partnership in healthcare. The dignitaries also felicitated key contributors to the mission — Dr. Bappaditya Som (President, AOGS), Dr. Jayanta Roy (HOD, Agartala Medical College), Dr. Priti Kumar (National Coordinator, Sampoorna Tripura), Dr. JL Baidya (State Coordinator), Dr. Arindam Mallik (Secretary, AOGS), Dr Ishita Guha ( State Programme officer RCH ) , Dr. Parvez Memon (Associate Director, Jhpiego), and master trainers from Bokaro Dr Niveditta Datta and Dr Seema Mehrotra from Lucknow.

In a significant step towards improving emergency obstetric care, Dr. Priti Kumar announced the provision of lifesaving NASG (Non-Pneumatic Anti-Shock Garments) and Uterine Balloon tamponade to Agartala and Tripura Medical Colleges to support training and management of PPH cases, a leading cause of maternal mortality.

The project was led by Dr Priti Kumar, National Project Director and Dr JL Baidya, State co-ordinator with support Arindam Saha, State Program Manager Jhpiego. The Sampoorna Tripura Mission stands as a testament to the power of partnership between government, professional bodies, and development organizations, united by the shared goal of ensuring that no mother in Tripura loses her life while giving birth. Dr. Ishita Guha, State Program Officer, Reproductive & Child Health (RCH), Government of Tripura delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging the collaborative effort and extending best wishes for future endeavours.
