Agartala, 24th September 2026 : Dharmanagar has remained tense over the past few days amid reports of internal conflict within the ruling party, with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staging a protest on Thursday against the alleged role of Barnali Goswami, wife of Dharmanagar MLA Jahar Chakraborty, in an attack on an ABVP leader.
The protest continued throughout the day in and around the District Magistrate’s office premises, where a large number of ABVP activists gathered demanding immediate action against those allegedly involved in the incident.
According to the protesters, the incident began on September 22. They alleged that BJP worker and ABVP leader Munna Pal was assaulted at the BJP office in Dharmanagar on Wednesday. They further alleged that Pal was subsequently attacked again at his residence. Local residents reportedly rushed to the spot after learning about the incident, following which the police were informed.
The ABVP activists alleged that despite a complaint being lodged with the police, no arrests had been made. Demanding immediate arrests, they launched a protest at the District Magistrate’s office premises on Thursday. During the demonstration, protesters also burnt an effigy of Barnali Goswami.
Later, the Officer-in-Charge of Dharmanagar Police Station reached the spot and assured the protesters that those involved in the alleged attack would be arrested within the next 12 hours.
ABVP leaders warned that failure to make the arrests within the stipulated time would lead to a larger agitation in Dharmanagar. Speaking during the protest, organisation leader Rupak Sen said that students and local residents would intensify the movement if action was not taken.
The protesters also appealed to those allegedly involved in the incident to refrain from further confrontation, warning that students could launch a wider movement if their demands were not addressed.
Meanwhile, police action and the allegations surrounding the attack are expected to determine the next course of developments in Dharmanagar. The allegations against Barnali Goswami and others remain claims made by the protesters and would require confirmation through the police investigation.
