Agartala, 27th November 2024:  The swift action of the Ambassa subdivision administration thwarted an illegal child marriage scheduled to take place in Hridoy Basti. Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Deputy Collector and Magistrate (DCM) Pankaj Dutta intervened to prevent the marriage of a 12-year-old girl.

Upon receiving the information, the administration, accompanied by CDPO Kajal Kaoli, police personnel, and Child Line workers, reached the location to investigate. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the girl’s marriage was arranged to a boy from the nearby Sundarbans area, with the ceremony planned for the same night. Officials visited the girl’s home and verified her birth certificate, confirming her minor status. However, the girl was initially reported to be at the boy’s house. The team proceeded to the boy’s residence, where his family admitted to the planned marriage but claimed the girl had returned to her home. After a second round of inspection, the girl was found at her residence. Speaking to reporters, DCM Pankaj Dutta stated that Child Line workers would provide counseling to both the girl and her mother, ensuring their well-being and raising awareness about the consequences of child marriage.
