Agartala, 29th May 2024:   In a bid to tackle the rampant issue of blocked drainage systems caused by construction materials left on roadsides, Agartala Municipal Corporation initiated a decisive operation on Wednesday. The campaign targeted the Netaji Chowmuhani area of Agartala, aims to curb the detrimental effects of this irresponsible behavior on the city’s infrastructure.

Expressing concern over the longstanding problem, an official from Agartala Municipal Corporation remarked, “For a considerable period, certain individuals in Agartala have been constructing multi-storied buildings, callously leaving construction materials obstructing the roadsides.”

The consequences of this negligence became starkly evident during recent rains, as water accumulated in unprecedented areas, causing inconvenience to residents and commuters alike. Areas such as Banamalipur, Netaji Chowmuhani, Ramnagar, Krishnanagar, and Dhaleswar bore the brunt of this issue, exacerbating the suffering of the populace.

In response, Agartala Municipal Corporation has taken a firm stance against those responsible, imposing penalties and actively removing construction materials obstructing the drainage systems. “Strict legal action will be taken against those opportunistically blocking road drains,” declared an official spokesperson.

Wednesday’s operation saw several residences, including Martin Residency in the Netaji Chowmuhani area, being raided and fined for their role in exacerbating the drainage issue. Furthermore, the corporation’s task forces have pledged to sustain such initiatives in the future, ensuring the ongoing maintenance of the city’s infrastructure.

This crackdown comes amidst persistent calls for regular and proactive measures to address the issue, as the unchecked accumulation of construction materials continues to plague various neighborhoods across Agartala. Previous announcements by the corporation regarding similar operations had failed to yield substantial results, necessitating renewed efforts to combat the problem effectively.

As the city grapples with the repercussions of blocked drainage systems, residents remain hopeful that sustained actions like these will alleviate their plight and ensure the smooth functioning of Agartala’s infrastructure in the long run.
