Agartala Public School breaks new ground with student council election

Date:

Agartala, 16th May 2026 :   The rise of English medium schools in Tripura over the last 25 years has reshaped the state’s educational landscape. While many institutions are run by religious organizations or private groups, Agartala Public School (APS) in Baldakhal near Chandrapur stands out for its commitment to holistic learning and democratic values.

Established in 2011–12 by senior journalist Arun Nath—founder of Tripura’s first English daily Tripura Observer in 1992—the school began with nursery classes and has since expanded to Class X. Today, APS educates more than 300 students, offering an environment that blends academic excellence with character-building.

In a landmark initiative, APS organized its first student council election on Saturday. The entire student body participated in the voting process, conducted peacefully under the supervision of returning officer Mousumi Rani Saha. Results declared Afrina Khan (Class IX) as Prime Minister, Sujata Sutradhar (IX) as Home Minister, Tanmay Datta (X) as Sports Minister, Mahek Chowdhury (VII) as Culture Minister, and Nilakshi Das (IX) as Education Minister. Principal-in-Charge Shiba Prasad Bhowmik oversaw the proceedings.

Arun Nath explained that the initiative was designed to give students firsthand experience of democratic practices. “We wanted them to learn the spirit of elections as part of their education. The enthusiasm among students proved the idea was a success,” he said. Nath highlighted that APS is the only school in Tripura—government or private—to introduce such a system.

The school has also distinguished itself by observing World Students’ Day on October 15 last year, commemorating the birth anniversary of former President and scientist A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Nath confirmed that APS will continue to mark the day annually to inspire students.

With these initiatives, Agartala Public School is not only expanding access to English-medium education but also nurturing civic responsibility and cultural awareness among its young learners.
