Agartala’s Old Jail road turns death trap, residents demand urgent repairs

Agartala, 15th December 2025:   Residents of Old Jail Road, located in the heart of Agartala, have raised serious concerns over the deteriorating condition of a key city road that has remained in disrepair for nearly a year. The stretch, once a vital thoroughfare, has now turned into a virtual death trap, prompting locals to voice their frustration to the media on Monday.

According to residents, the road is riddled with large potholes, broken asphalt, and stagnant water, making daily commutes perilous. “It’s no longer just an inconvenience—it’s a hazard,” said one local, highlighting the growing risk of accidents. The situation becomes particularly alarming during rainfall, when water-filled craters become invisible, increasing the likelihood of mishaps.

What’s more concerning, locals say, is the impact on emergency services. Ambulances, fire trucks, and police vehicles are reportedly unable to navigate the damaged road, forcing families to carry critically ill patients by hand or on shoulders to reach medical help. “It’s inhumane and unacceptable,” said another resident.

Despite repeated complaints to the municipal authorities and the administration, no permanent solution has been implemented. “We’ve approached the authorities multiple times, but all we’ve received are empty assurances,” residents lamented.

The road’s condition poses heightened risks for schoolchildren, the elderly, and women, who are often forced to navigate the treacherous path on foot. Locals argue that despite being situated in a prime area of the city, Old Jail Road has been neglected for far too long.

Frustrated by the inaction, residents have warned of launching a larger protest if immediate steps are not taken to repair the road.
