Agartala, 11th October 2026 : The state government is giving utmost importance to the production of agricultural and horticultural crops so that, apart from food grains, self-reliance can be achieved in various horticultural and garden crops, thereby increasing the overall income of farmers across the state.
This was stated by Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath today while inaugurating various projects and laying foundation stones for new projects of the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department in Kalyanpur and Khowai.
The Minister inaugurated the office of the Deputy Director of Agriculture, Horticulture and Soil Conservation in Khowai district. He also inaugurated the two-storey rural market at Brindavan Ghat Bazar in Khowai district and opened it to farmers and traders.
Later, the Minister said that there are currently 554 agricultural markets in Tripura.
“Various works have been undertaken to improve the infrastructure of these markets, including sheds, stalls, toilets, drinking water facilities and drainage systems. Development work has been initiated in 204 markets, of which 87 have been completed and 117 are in progress,” he said.
The Minister said that the government aims to develop better market infrastructure for farmers so that they can easily buy and sell agricultural produce and receive fair prices for their hard work. He added that the government is committed to the overall development of agriculture and farmers.
He said that each district in the state currently has a Deputy Director of Agriculture and a Deputy Director of Horticulture and Land Conservation.
“In addition, the state government has taken a policy decision to open an Agricultural Sub-Divisional Office in every block to ensure that farmers receive the benefits of various central and state government schemes. At present, there are 47 Agricultural Sub-Divisional Offices and nine Horticulture and Land Conservation Sub-Divisional Offices in the state,” he said.
The Minister also highlighted various initiatives undertaken in the state’s agricultural sector.
He informed that, between 2018-19 and 2025-26, a total of 204 market development projects had been undertaken across the state, with a total allocation of Rs. 461.83 crore.
“It is worth noting that, during the five years from 2013 to 2017, a total of 71 market infrastructure development projects were undertaken, for which only Rs. 20.26 crore was allocated. The government has also initiated the process of creating a unique Farmer ID for every farmer to ensure that they receive the benefits of various central and state government welfare schemes,” he said.
The Minister said that 5,550 hectares of land are currently under natural farming in the state, involving 13,875 farmers. In the financial year 2026-27, an additional 11,250 hectares of land will be brought under this method of cultivation.
He further said that, since 2020-21, organically produced crops worth a total of Rs. 17.2 crore have been marketed in various states across the country and in foreign countries.
The Minister also stated that, over the last eight years, a total of 50,300 agricultural machines had been distributed across the state with a subsidy of Rs. 233.63 crore. In comparison, only 2,600 agricultural machines were distributed between 2013 and 2017, with a total subsidy of Rs. 28.35 crore.
