Agartala, 3rd August 2026: The East Agartala Local Committee of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) on Monday submitted a deputation to Assistant Engineer of Tripura Jal Board Sub-Division, Nirmal Kanti Pal, demanding immediate measures to address the persistent drinking water crisis in several parts of Agartala.
Speaking to reporters after submitting the memorandum, AIDWA leaders alleged that residents have been facing acute water shortages due to inadequate water supply and damaged pipelines in different localities. They claimed that several pipelines were damaged during Smart City development works, disrupting the regular supply of drinking water to households.
The organisation also raised concerns over delays in the implementation of Atal Jal Scheme connections, stating that many households are yet to receive functional water supply despite the scheme.
Highlighting public health concerns, AIDWA urged the authorities to conduct regular testing of drinking water quality, warning that contaminated water could lead to outbreaks of water-borne diseases, including jaundice. The leaders also demanded the immediate use of bleaching powder in affected areas during the ongoing monsoon season to prevent the spread of infections.
They further alleged that utility pipelines are frequently being damaged during road excavation works carried out by different agencies without proper coordination, causing inconvenience to residents across the city.
According to the delegation, Assistant Engineer Nirmal Kanti Pal informed them that the department is making efforts to repair the damaged pipelines. He reportedly said that a major pipeline near the Motor Stand area was accidentally cut during Smart City work late on Sunday night and repair work is underway despite adverse weather conditions.
AIDWA urged the authorities to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply across Agartala and its adjoining areas, stating that the ongoing crisis has severely affected the daily lives of residents. The organisation also appealed to the media to highlight the issue so that the concerns of the affected people receive the attention of the administration.
