Agartala, 18th May 2026: A serious case of alleged sexual assault has sparked strong reactions in West Tripura, where a women’s rights organization has sought strict action against the accused through an official deputation.
According to reports, a youth from Kamalpur area allegedly lured a young woman with the promise of gifting an iPhone and brought her to the Agartala Railway Station on Saturday. He then reportedly took her to a hotel, where the assault took place. Later, the victim was left in Agartala city.
Unable to cope with the incident, the survivor approached the West Agartala Women Police Station, following which the matter was forwarded to Amtali Police Station for investigation. Police subsequently arrested the accused.
On Monday, a delegation from the All India Democratic Women’s Association (West Tripura District Committee) submitted a deputation at the West Police Station, demanding exemplary punishment for the accused. The delegation included leaders Minati Biswas, Krishna Dey, Mitali Bhattacharya, and Arati Nandi, among others.
They strongly condemned the incident, stating that such crimes are bringing disrepute to the region and emphasized the urgent need to ensure women’s safety and stricter enforcement of law to prevent such incidents in the future.
