Agartala, 27th May 2025: The Health Department of the Tripura government has issued a notification for the recruitment of 19 optometrists and 20 ophthalmic assistants in an effort to improve eye care services across the state. The move aims to enhance accessibility to modern ophthalmic care, particularly in remote areas.
Expressing gratitude for the initiative, the All Tripura Optometry Association lauded the government’s decision, stating that the recruitment would significantly bolster the healthcare sector and benefit residents in need of specialized eye treatment.
Speaking to media persons here, ATOA President Subir Bhowmik said “Currently, Tripura has 25 optometrists working under the state health department and an additional 25 ophthalmic assistants employed through the National Health Mission. However, as per World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, one optometrist is required for every 20,000 individuals. Based on this standard, Tripura requires approximately 200 optometrists to adequately serve its population, whereas only 25 are presently engaged—highlighting a shortfall of 175 professionals.”
In light of the gap, optometry professionals have urged the state government to expand the workforce further. Their appeal includes the creation and appointment of 200 optometrists, 50 senior optometrists, and 20 optometry officers to strengthen public health services and ensure wider availability of eye care.
