Agartala, 10th January 2026:   Serious allegations of irregularities and corruption have surfaced in the construction of a road in Chebri Peknichhara, with local residents voicing strong dissatisfaction over the quality of work.

It is reported that nearly three kilometers of road had collapsed and deteriorated, prompting a new construction project worth approximately ₹41.9 million. The contract included metaling, carpeting, and drainage work. However, locals allege that the contractor carried out the project in blatant violation of norms, using substandard materials and skipping proper carpeting. Instead, a thin layer of tar was laid directly over the old pitch, raising concerns about durability.

Residents also questioned the quality of boulders used along the roadside, claiming they were of inferior grade. The drainage work, which was part of the project, has similarly drawn criticism for poor execution.

Locals reported that the supervising engineer, who was supposed to oversee the construction, was absent during the work. Two other individuals were present in his place, but they failed to provide satisfactory answers when questioned about the quality of the project.

Local residents expressed frustration, warning that the road may not last more than a few months. “The previous road was better than this one,” lamented several villagers.

Sources allege that the contractor enjoys political protection, with claims that large sums of money were paid in advance to secure official approval. Engineer Amit Das has also come under scrutiny, with accusations that he has repeatedly colluded with contractors to compromise the quality of public works.

Authorities are now being urged to investigate the matter thoroughly to determine whether public funds were misused.
