Allegations of Corruption: Newly-built road at Dharmanagar develops craters within months

Agartala, 22nd July 2025:   Barely months after construction, a three-kilometre stretch of road between Padmapur Tri-Junction and Krishnapur Tri-Junction under Dharmanagar subdivision have deteriorated severely, raising serious questions about the quality of work and potential misuse of government funds.

Constructed at a cost of Rs 376.59 lakh with funding from NABARD, the road was scheduled to be completed within 360 days, by October 19, 2024. However, large potholes and cracks have already emerged, making travel hazardous for both vehicles and pedestrians.

“This road has become a death trap. We risk our lives every day just trying to commute,” said local resident Sanjib Debnath. “How can a road built for crores of rupees fall apart in such a short time?”

Despite claims of ongoing development and infrastructure improvement in Dharmanagar and other parts of the northern district, opposition voices have strongly criticized the apparent mismanagement of public funds.

“Crores were sanctioned for a mere three kilometres, yet the result is dismal. Where did the money go?” questioned a local opposition leader. “This is not an isolated case. Allegations are surfacing that leaders and workers close to the ruling party are siphoning off funds under the guise of development.”

Residents are now demanding a thorough investigation into the construction process and the agencies involved. “This is taxpayers’ money. The Chief Minister must intervene and ensure accountability,” said another resident.
