Allegations of corruption rock Manu Water Resources department

Agartala, 23rd March 2025:   The Manu Water Resources Department has come under fire once again, with allegations of rampant corruption in the construction of cement concrete blocks along the Manu River. Local MLA Paul Dangshu and MDC of Manu-Chailengta constituency Sanjay Das have publicly condemned the department, calling for immediate action against those responsible.

The construction project funded through MGNREGA tenders at a cost of crores of rupees was intended to prevent erosion along the riverbanks. However, reports suggest that the work has been marred by financial mismanagement and substandard practices. An agency named Dipankar Dey was awarded the contract for Rs 2.23 crore, but locals allege that the contractor engaged in fraudulent activities from the outset.

“Instead of using 40 mm concrete as specified, the blocks were built with two-and-a-half bricks, silt soil, and cement. This is unacceptable, especially when the lives and homes of people living along the riverbanks are at stake,” a local resident claimed.

Despite repeated complaints from the public, no action has been taken. Locals allege that the supervising engineer, Anjit, dismissed their concerns and even lashed out at those who protested. “The department has become a den of corruption under the SDO’s watch. They seem more interested in lining their pockets than protecting the community,” said another resident.

Upon visiting the construction site, MLA Paul Dangshu and MDC Sanjay Das were reportedly shocked by the state of the project. “Such corruption will not be tolerated. The SDO must take proper steps to investigate the agency and ensure accountability,” MLA Dangshu declared.

MDC Sanjay Das echoed these sentiments, warning that if no action is taken, a formal complaint will be filed with higher authorities. “Corruption at any cost is unacceptable,” he stated firmly.

The locals are now demanding a thorough investigation into the matter and strict action against the corrupt officers and contractors involved. “We need justice. This is about the safety and well-being of our community,” one resident said.
