Agartala,  19th December 2025:    Serious allegations of financial misuse and irregularities have surfaced in the name of riverbank protection in the Golaghati Gram Panchayat area. The project, aimed at preventing erosion along the Burima River, involves the construction of boulders using a mix of bricks, cement, and sand. However, questions have been raised about the quality of work, with claims that even departmental staff have acknowledged the lapses.

It is reported that the Water Resources department awarded the contract to a private contractor and appointed an official to monitor the quality of work. Locals allege that despite the official’s presence, irregularities are being carried out openly. Instead of using the prescribed mix of materials, the contractor is allegedly producing boulders almost entirely with sand, raising suspicions of an attempt to siphon off government funds.

Locals accounts and visuals from the Burima riverbank confirm the poor quality of construction. Residents claim the contractor is deliberately cutting corners to maximize profit, while the supervising official remains a helpless spectator. When questioned, the official reportedly admitted that his instructions were being ignored and that the contractor was proceeding without supplying the necessary materials.

Locals further allege that the contractor, based in Agartala, often invokes the names of influential leaders to silence opposition. Concerns are mounting that the substandard work could lead to severe erosion, putting nearby homes and properties at risk of being swallowed by the river.

In light of these fears, residents have demanded an immediate halt to the ongoing work and called for a high-level investigation into the matter.
