Allegations of underweight LPG cylinders spark protest against Shanti Gas Agency

Date:

Agartala, 3rd August 2026:  Allegations of supplying underweight LPG cylinders triggered protests against Shanti Gas Agency during a cooking gas distribution camp held at the grounds adjacent to Birchandranagar Shaheed Smriti Vidya Mandir under Santirbazar subdivision on Monday.

According to local sources, the agency was distributing LPG cylinders to consumers as part of its scheduled supply. During the distribution, some customers became suspicious and demanded that the cylinders be weighed in the presence of the agency staff. Consumers alleged that the weighing process revealed that several cylinders contained less gas than the prescribed quantity.

Customers claimed that while one cylinder was found to have the correct weight, many others allegedly showed shortages ranging from around 2 kg to as much as 4 kg. The findings led to widespread anger among consumers, who staged a protest at the distribution site.

The aggrieved customers alleged that such irregularities had been continuing for a long time due to inadequate monitoring and that consumers had been repeatedly deprived of the quantity of gas they were entitled to receive. They demanded that weighing of every LPG cylinder be made compulsory before distribution and called for an impartial investigation into the alleged irregularities.

Several consumers also alleged that LPG cylinders were being made available in the area in exchange for extra money despite reports of regular shortages. They questioned how cylinders could be supplied through unofficial means when many genuine consumers reportedly struggle to receive timely refills.

The protesters urged the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department and the concerned minister to conduct a thorough inquiry into the allegations and take appropriate action against those found responsible.
