Agartala, 3rd October 2023: In a decisive move to decongest Agartala city and facilitate smoother traffic flow, the Agartala Municipal Corporation conducted a demolition operation this morning, razing illegal shops constructed on government land on both sides of the road in the GB Bazar area.

Mayor Dipak Majumdar, speaking on the matter, highlighted that these encroachments had persisted despite repeated warnings, leading to the necessity of this action.

“The illegal occupiers were given ample opportunities to voluntarily dismantle or vacate their constructions. Regrettably, many paid no heed,” stated Mayor Majumdar.

He further emphasized that the expansion of the GB market road was imperative for the city’s development.”It is our duty to ensure that the city grows sustainably and remains accessible to all residents,” he added.

Mayor Majumdar also pointed out past administrative lapses, asserting that the AMC had not effectively discharged its duties in previous years. He underscored that since the formation of the government in 2018, there has been a renewed commitment to proper governance and urban planning.

The operation is slated to continue until Durga Pujo, with the aim of reclaiming all illegally occupied premises. The AMC, backed by the state government, is resolute in its efforts to restore order and ensure planned development within the city.

The demolition was carried out with the aid of heavy machinery, including bulldozers, marking a significant step towards reclaiming public space and enhancing the city’s infrastructure.

Residents and local businesses have expressed their support for the move, echoing the sentiment that such actions are necessary to pave the way for a more organized and accessible urban environment. The AMC is now gearing up for further initiatives aimed at optimizing the city’s layout for the benefit of all its inhabitants.
