Agartala, 1st September 2026 : The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) is gearing up to ensure a safe, clean and hassle-free Durga Puja celebration in the city, with special emphasis on road repairs, drainage improvement, idol immersion facilities and cleanliness.
Speaking at a special meeting of the Municipal Corporation, AMC Mayor Dipak Majumder said the annual meeting was convened to finalise preparations for the upcoming autumn festival and ensure that devotees and visitors from across the country and abroad can celebrate the Puja comfortably.
“Since visitors and devotees from various parts of the country and abroad flock to Agartala for this occasion, we want to ensure they can enjoy the Durga Puja festivities comfortably and move around safely and securely,” Majumder said.
He said the corporation is focusing on improving roads and drainage systems across Agartala. Special attention is also being given to Niranjan Ghat, the city’s primary Dashami immersion site, where a large number of idols are immersed every year. The modern arrangements introduced in recent years will continue this year.
According to the Mayor, 18 immersion ghats located across different wards are also being renovated and equipped with lighting facilities. This is aimed at facilitating smooth immersion as idols from different parts of the city are immersed at various locations.
“The Municipal Corporation takes responsibility for the immersion of idols brought to the Dashami Ghat, utilizing modern cranes and accompanying the process with traditional music and auspicious rituals,” he said, adding that meetings will also be held with Puja committees and clubs to brief them about the arrangements.
Majumder said the AMC’s initiatives since 2021, including city illumination, decoration, road repairs, cleanliness and improved immersion management, would be strengthened further this year.
The Mayor also announced the continuation of the annual Sharad Samman awards. Five city-level awards, including Best of the Best and Best Women-Organized Puja, will carry Rs 50,000 and trophies. Four awards will also be presented in each zone for Best Theme, Best Pandal, Best Idol and Best Overall Execution.
He added that Pujas promoting social awareness on HIV, substance abuse and plastic reduction would also receive recognition. The Chief Minister’s Cleanliness Award will likewise honour clubs and organisations contributing to cleanliness, including the top three and ten additional awardees.
