Agartala, 7th February 2026 : A delegation of the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Saturday visited several areas of Agartala city to assess and expedite the rehabilitation of small traders who were recently evicted as part of a traffic decongestion drive.
The delegation included the AMC Commissioner, the Director of the Smart City Project, and other senior administrative officials. During the visit, the team inspected locations near IGM Hospital as well as various areas around Battala to identify suitable sites for the rehabilitation of the affected traders.
A member of the administrative team, Saju Vaheed A said that the city already has designated vending and trading zones for small traders. However, he noted that many traders were not operating from those earmarked areas and instead had set up businesses along roadsides, leading to traffic congestion and inconvenience to the public. He said the eviction drive was carried out to address these issues and restore smooth traffic movement in the city.
He further stated that the administration is placing equal emphasis on rehabilitation alongside eviction. According to him, the problems and shortcomings in the previously identified trading zones are being reviewed and steps will be taken to resolve them. In addition, new alternative locations are also being identified to ensure that small traders can carry out their business activities without disruption.
The administration has assured that the designated and newly identified sites will be handed over to the small traders at the earliest. The Agartala Municipal Corporation expressed confidence that the initiative will not only help ease traffic congestion across the city but also safeguard the livelihood of small traders.
