Agartala, 9th July 2026: A major mishap was averted on Thursday morning after an ammonia gas leak occurred at a cold storage facility near Belonia Railway Station, triggering panic among residents and workers in the surrounding area.
Reportedly, a loud sound was heard from the cold storage premises early in the morning. The operator, identified as Tamal, rushed to inspect the source and found that ammonia gas was leaking heavily from a cylinder. Within minutes, dense white fumes spread across the area, creating panic and raising fears of a serious accident.
Displaying remarkable courage, Tamal attempted to stop the leak despite the hazardous conditions. During the effort, he was exposed to the toxic gas, which left his body covered with a white residue. He managed to escape safely, avoiding what could have been a fatal incident.
On receiving information, personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. Equipped with oxygen cylinders, firefighters safely approached the leaking cylinder and guided the operator in shutting off the gas supply. After sustained efforts, the leak was successfully brought under control.
No casualties or injuries were reported in the incident. However, the gas leak caused considerable panic in the locality for some time. Authorities have initiated an investigation to ascertain the cause of the ammonia leak and assess whether proper safety protocols were in place at the facility.
