Agartala, September 1, 2023: The residents of Gokulnagar No. 2 Colony in Purva Manu Village of Longtharai Valley subdivision locked the Anganwadi Kendra in their area over a recruitment dispute on Friday. They alleged that Supreeta Das, who was appointed as an Anganwadi worker, was from Ward No. 6 and not from Ward No. 5, where the center is located. They claimed that she got the job by paying cash to Narayan, who donated the land for the center. They demanded that Sangeeta Das, who was a genuine claimant from Ward No. 5, should be given the job instead.
The residents said that they were following the guidelines of the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education, which state that Anganwadi midwives or helpers should be appointed from the ward where the Anganwadi Kendra is located. They said that they locked the center for an indefinite period as a protest and would not open it until the issue is resolved. The newly recruited Anganwadi worker, Suprita Das, admitted that she was from Ward No. 6 and said that she was performing her duties outside in the field at the center.
Anganwadi Kendra are rural child care centers that provide basic health care, nutrition, and education to children and women under the Integrated Child Development Services program. The recruitment dispute has raised questions about the transparency and fairness of the selection process of Anganwadi workers.
